On behalf of all of us at Data Design Systems, we would like to offer our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to all people who suffered the personal loss of friends and loved ones on September 11.
Corporate Update
In the last issue of Dispatch, I announced that DDS had decided to focus on developing a WEB SCM solution to support our new product strategy. As we started down the path of developing the specifications for the new product, we came upon another product opportunity. This caused us to rethink our strategy and we decided to change course slightly.
We are now testing the market with a prototype of an Enterprise Software Distribution (ESD) product that will interface with existing source version management solutions. The new ESD product will incorporate the RMS / PrimeCode release packaging and distribution functions. A number of DDS customers have told us that they would like to have these functions available for their UNIX and Windows source version tools. Ron Erlich and I have started visiting some of our clients to get their feedback on the ESD prototype. I would be delighted to hear from you if your organization is interested in such functionality.
Custom Report Writer (CRW), another exciting addition to the functionality of our SCM solution, was released in April 2001. It is an Enscribe-to-SQL database conversion and report generating tool. RMS and PrimeCode users can use a number of standard CRW reports or create custom reports using the SQL tool of choice to access the wealth of information in RMS and PrimeCode. The external specifications for PrimeCode 4.0 and RMS D30.01 will be completed by mid-January, immediately initiating the actual coding. Once the specifications are complete, we will be able to estimate the release date.
This release will incorporate PrimeCode database changes designed to improve the integration of the Core (RMS) servers with the Feature (APPLY) servers. The current OSS SCM functionality in PrimeCode will also be enhanced significantly.
Data Design Systems has been through a year of change with seven new team members coming onboard, combined with expansion of our head office facilities. I am pleased to report that in our recent round of performance reviews, the staff was unanimous in their opinion that DDS has made significant improvements in team execution in the past year.
I am confident that DDS is going to continue to experience exciting changes and growth in 2002. I would like to thank all of our customers for their continued support, and our distributors and helpdesk support organizations for their continued contributions to the success of DDS. More importantly, I would like to wish everyone a prosperous and happy new year.

Disaster Recovery or Business Continuity?
Do we want to be reactive or proactive? That is the question. While the recent acts of terrorism pointed out the need for sound disaster recovery practices, there are plenty of lesser disasters that occur on a daily basis. These disasters are caused by the elements, and by disgruntled employees. Businesses do not have sound practices because these disasters have not affected their company's bottom line. Logical, right? Why would you pay for something you may never use?
Research conducted by NVT Computing found that among organizations that do not have effective contingency plans in place at the time of a disaster, 80% of these organizations do not survive for more than two years after the disaster. (Network World Fusion: Options for Disaster Recovery by Michael Osterman, October 17, 2001)
So, what is the difference between Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity? Well, your down time is considerably lower with business continuity, because there is no reaction time involved.
Business Continuity is simply an extension of Disaster Recovery. There is no right or wrong answer in this case, but it is a wrong move if you do not have a contingency plan in place.

2001 IRUG Conference "Primary Colours"
Data Design Systems decided to add a splash of colour and contrast to this year's user group meeting at the Renaissance Hotel at SkyDome. Adding a new guest speaker, Craig Senior from CGI Group, to the conference and a touch of green during lunch, enabling conference attendees a chance to view the Toronto Blue Jays' baseball field.
Client presentations were fantastic this year, including Brown and Company's Brian White and Chuck Loney's speech about the incorporation of Carr Scott's Disaster Recovery software with PrimeCode. Optimark's Hector Olmeda outlined the importance of Automated Software Control Management in the workplace and finally, Robert Kaylor described the RMS process at J.P. Morgan Chase.
From Left to Right: Dan Crook, Katherine Hollander, Chi Choi, David Campbell, David McFarlin, Craig Senior, Tina Fioravanti, Chuck Jaskolka.
Clockwise from top: Robert Kaylor, Christine Bonner, Dan Crook.
Enjoyable expressions by fellow presenters definitely amused and entertained everyone. Switching activities around this year proved successful for all who attended. Our pre-conference Niagara tour had something for everyone, including a trip to Niagara Falls, and tours of Taylor & Bate Brewery, Peninsula Ridge Estate Winery, and Kittling Ridge Distillery.
Suggestions are always welcomed for future conference events. Please contact me at bonner@datadesign.com or (905) 677-6666 ext 244.

Live at the Met! 2002 IRUG Conference on Friday, June 14th in Metropolitan Toronto
Toronto is a culturally diverse city with the sights, sounds and scents of several countries all rolled into one city. Data Design Systems wants to show you what Toronto has to offer during the day, as well as in the evening at the post-conference event.
Keep an eye out for further details.
European RMS / PrimeCode User Group (ERUG) is Established
On August 6th, 2001, several United Kingdom/European Union users and Data Design staff, met in the London area to discuss various issues relating to our software solutions.
It was an informal meeting for European clients who could not attend the IRUG conference in Toronto. A number of ideas and user challenges were discussed with great input from everyone in attendance.
Many thanks to National Air Traffic Services for hosting the event!
An informal survey of European area users expressed interest in establishing a regular meeting, and suggested it take place the day before the Joint European Conference. The next Joint European Conference is in Lyon, France in mid-May. We will hold the first official "ERUG" (European RMS / PrimeCode User Group) in Lyon, France on May 10th. Mark your calendar; location and time details will follow.

Base24 User Group Conference 2001
This year's BUG annual meeting was held in beautiful Lake Tahoe. It was a very nice venue for the meeting and the User Group did another excellent job of organizing the event. The terrorist attacks of September 11th shocked us all and prevented a few speakers from reaching Lake Tahoe. It was a difficult time for most people, but the show did proceed, and under the circumstances, I feel it ran very smoothly.
Exciting changes were announced, including a new name, ACI Customer Exchange (ACE), and the replacement of long-time board member and president, Sharon Adelmann, with Jim Spicer as the new ACE president.
Data Design is pleased to be able to support the BASE24 user community by attending these events, and updating users on our new product offerings.
We feel these user group meetings are of great benefit to the user community and Data Design. We look forward to attending next year's BUG meeting on September 15-18 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Help is Here!
On-Line Help for PrimeCode is officially available! Announced at the IRUG conference in June, the news was received with thunderous applause from the attendees.
There had never been much more than the Quick Start guide to help a novice user or even a veteran RMS user to navigate through the new interface offered with PrimeCode.
Data Design Systems introduced an on-line tutorial to support its introductory training and laboratory exercises in March 2000. The tutorial, which is also included on every PrimeCode CD, provides each level of SCM user, from developer to librarian, with an overview of the concepts of source configuration management.
In July, the new HTML format of help made it easier for users to quickly locate the topic they were interested in. Pressing F1 presented help relevant to the active window of PrimeCode that the user was working with.
